Research Areas

The discovery of new scientific concepts and technologies, especially in emerging interdisciplinary fields, is the lifeblood of Rensselaer’s culture and a core goal for faculty, staff, and students.

The department sustains well-developed research programs not only in the traditional areas of analytical, inorganic, organic, and physical chemistry, but also in the interdisciplinary fields of polymer chemistry, biochemistry and medicinal chemistry.

Collaborative programs with the Biology, Computer Science, Physics, and Mathematical Science departments, and the School of Engineering, the Center for Integrated Electronics and Albany Medical College provide essential connections between chemistry and other areas vital to modern society.

The Rensselaer Exploratory Center for Cheminformatics Research*

Advances in the generation, mining and analysis of chemical information is crucial to the development of new drug therapies, and to modern methods of bioinformatics and molecular medicine.

RECCR emphasizes the central role of Cheminformatics in modern biotechnology efforts, molecular design projects and bioinformatics programs.

Baruch '60 Center for Biochemical Solar Energy*

It is widely recognized that the construction of a new generation of highly-efficient photovoltaic devices for solar energy conversion must incorporate the fundamental principles of natural photosynthesis.

Understanding the basic processes of photosynthesis can enable us to create systems that mimic bio-molecules and produce energy from sun light. Bio-inspired chemistry for energy is an area in which biological design principles are applied to the construction of man-made hybrid nano-chemical catalytic structures for efficient energy conversion and storage.
