Guidelines for Using the Collections

The materials in these Collections exist to preserve the heritage of the past and to be available for all researchers. Our regulations, therefore, are designed to ensure the preservation of these materials. We solicit your assistance in this endeavor.

Departmental hours are Monday - Friday, 9:00-12:00 and 1:00-4:00.

Readers are required to complete a registration form and to log on it all manuscript and book materials used.

Care must be taken in the examination of all materials. No materials may be removed from the Reading Room, and the original order of all manuscripts and folders must be maintained. Pencil must be used; the use of ink is prohibited. Smoking, eating, and drinking are not permitted.

Readers are not permitted in the stack area except in the company of an Archives staff member, or with the special permission of the Archivist. All coats, briefcases, bags and backpacks must be deposited with departmental staff.

All photocopying of materials is done by the Archives staff, and is subject to their restrictions.

Any researcher who quotes directly from unpublished materials (for use in an unpublished or published paper) must use the following format.

Examples:

RPI President's Office (Ricketts) Papers. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Archives and Special Collections. Troy, N.Y.

Roebling Collection. Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute Archives and Special Collections. Troy, N.Y.

No original materials may be published without the appropriate written permission of the Institute Archivist. In granting permission to publish, the Institute Archives and Special Collections does not surrender its own right thereafter to publish the material, or to grant permission to others to publish it; nor does the Library assume any responsibility for infringement of copyright. If in doubt, please ask.
