Earned a Ph.D. in physical chemsitry at Yale University.

Worked for Westinghouse Electrical Corporation, where he ultimately became Technical Director.

1977 - 1983

Served as Dean of Science and later Provost at Carnegie-Mellon University.

1983

Appointed Vice President of Academic Affairs and Provost of Rensselaer Polytechnic Institute.

1984

Named Acting President of Rensselaer.

1985 - 1987

President of Rensselaer

1987

Named Institute Professor of Science and Technology.
