Adam Oates ’85

Adam Oates ’85 Honored: Hockey fans packed the Houston Field House on Nov. 5 to honor legendary NHL hockey player Adam Oates ’85, as he was inducted into the Rensselaer Athletic Hall of Fame. During the “Adam Oates Night” ceremony, a banner with Oates’ Rensselaer jersey number (12) was unveiled in the Houston Field House rafters, initiating Rensselaer’s new Hockey Ring of Honor. Oates played three seasons for the Engineers, leading the men’s hockey team to the 1985 NCAA National Championship. That year, he established school single season records for points (91) and assists (60) as well as career assists (150), all of which he still holds. Oates went on to score 341 goals with 1,079 assists for 1,420 points in 1,337 games for seven NHL teams. A five-time All-Star Game participant, he retired last spring, ranking fifth all time in NHL history in assists and 13th in points.
