Marr’s IT Firm Makes Inc. 500 List

* From Fries to Fuel: Invention Converts Used Cooking Oil to Energy

Michael Marr ’96 (left) had a good thing going with the IT consulting firm he launched in 2002. It became even better when he merged his company with that of his sales partner Khash Sarrafi in 2007 to form Castle Rock Innovations.

In September, Inc. magazine included Castle Rock on its annual Inc. 500 list, which ranks the nation’s fastest-growing private companies. The company had experienced 700 percent growth in 2008.

“If you want to know which companies are going to change the world, look at the Inc. 500,” said Inc. editor Jane Berentson. “The Inc. 500 list is Inc. magazine’s tribute to American business ingenuity and ambition.”

Castle Rock Innovations was ranked no. 379 overall on the Inc. list, no. 19 in the Chicago area, and no. 37 in IT Services, the sector with the most companies (57) on the 2009 list.

“This year our competitors had big declines, but we kept going,” says Marr. “We definitely have not gone backward.” In fact, he says the company, which employs 18, is looking to continue its growth through acquisitions.

Castle Rock provides software development, management consulting, and information management and architecture services to such Fortune 500 companies as Johnson & Johnson, Novo Nordisk, Merrill Lynch, and Allstate.
