Balaram Sinharoy, M.S. ’88, Ph.D. ’92, has been named an IBM Fellow, the company’s highest technical distinction. Since the program’s inception in 1963, only 238 individuals have earned this distinction; currently 77 hold the title. Sinharoy is well-known as one of the world’s top processor architects.

Among the technologies he has pioneered are simultaneous multi-threading and power-efficient, high performance, multi-core server design. He is currently chief architect of IBM’s next generation POWER technology, responsible for micro-architecture and differentiation features. Before that, he was chief architect of IBM’s POWER7 processor, on which the Watson computer runs. Sinharoy, who has more than 80 patents to his credit, splits his time between IBM offices in Poughkeepsie, N.Y., and Austin, Texas.
