Nicholas Donofrio ’67, a Rensselaer trustee and IBM fellow emeritus, received the Rensselaer Alumni Association’s Distinguished Service Award, its highest honor, at the RAA Annual Awards Dinner Oct. 26.

An active undergraduate on campus, Donofrio went on to lead a career spanning more than 40 years with IBM, during which he led virtually all of IBM’s manufacturing and development teams. From 1997 until his retirement in October 2008, he served as executive vice president for innovation and technology.

In addition to owning his own consulting firm, Donofrio serves on a number of boards and is currently co-chair of the New York Hall of Science, as well as serving on the Secretary of Energy’s Advisory Board. He is a past chairman of the National Action Council for Minorities in Engineering, and was appointed by the U.S. Department of Education in 2005 to serve on the Commission on the Future of Higher Education.

A Rensselaer trustee since 1993, Donofrio also serves as the Trustee Annual Fund chair and has been a longtime volunteer for the Rensselaer Annual Fund.

In his acceptance remarks, Donofrio said, “I am honored and truly humbled. If I did anything great, it was because of the solid, thoughtful, relevant education that I received here.”
