Matthew Wilson ’83, the Sherman Fairchild Professor of Neuroscience at MIT, was inducted into the American Academy of Arts and Sciences in October. One of the nation’s oldest and most prestigious honorary societies, the Academy is also a leading center for independent policy research.

In addition to his professorship at MIT, Wilson, shown signing the Academy’s Book of Members in a tradition that dates back to 1780, is associate head for education in MIT’s Department of Brain and Cognitive Sciences and a Picower Scholar. His lab is interested in teasing apart the mechanisms of sleep and arousal, and applications of neuroscience in engineering and the study of intelligence. In 2011, he was named a fellow of the American Association for the Advancement of Science “for studies of plasticity of spatial coding in the hippocampus and of the contribution of sleep to memory storage using many single-neuron approaches.”
