Odilo Vazquez, M.E. ’98, right, was honored in September with the U.S. Small Business Administration’s 2011 New Jersey Minority Small Business Person of the Year award. Vazquez is president and managing partner of F3 Engineering, a Paterson, N.J.,-based company that designs, develops, and manufactures proprietary motion control products for military and commercial applications.

Currently employing 45, with sales in excess of $10 million, F3 is moving to a larger 50,000-square-foot facility and projects the addition of another 100 jobs over the next five years. Much of the company’s revenue comes from contract manufacturing of complicated and high-priced aircraft and submarine components. F3 has also developed products of its own, including a side lateral engine mount for the Navy’s E2-C and advanced Hawkeye aircraft that adequately sustains the shock load associated with aircraft landings, catapult launches, and in-flight turbulence.

“Innovation and creativity are what continue to drive me,” said Vazquez when accepting his award. “I think it is very important for our customers to know that we are not a one-dimensional company and that we have the capabilities and expertise to do custom design work. The goal has always been to grow and develop this company into a $20 million business.”
