* Ray Tomlinson ’63 Named Inaugural Member of Internet Hall of Fame

*

The Internet Society, celebrating its 20th anniversary in 2012, established the Internet Hall of Fame to honor pioneers, innovators, and global connectors who have made significant contributions to the development of the global Internet. Among the inaugural inductees is Ray Tomlinson ’63, who was recognized for inventing network electronic mail, choosing the @ sign in emails to connect username with destination address.

Selected as an innovator, Tomlinson was recognized as having brought about a complete revolution, fundamentally changing the way people communicate. Today, tens of millions of email-enabled devices are in use every day.

Tomlinson was inducted, along with 32 other Internet pioneers including Vint Cerf and Tim Berners-Lee, during the Internet Society’s Global INET 2012 conference in Geneva, Switzerland, in April.

In his acceptance remarks, Tomlinson said, “I’m often asked, did I know what I was doing? And the answer is, yes, I knew exactly what I was doing. I just had no notion whatsoever of what the ultimate impact would be. What I was doing was providing a way for people to communicate with other people.”

Among his many awards, Tomlinson was inducted into the Rensselaer Alumni Hall of Fame in 2001.
