Weinbaum ’59 and Friedman ’77 Inducted into Academy

The American Academy of Arts and Sciences inducted two Rensselaer graduates into its 2013 class at a ceremony in Cambridge, Mass., Oct. 12. Since its founding in 1780, the academy has elected leading “thinkers and doers”—accomplished scholars, scientists, writers, artists, and philanthropic leaders—to respond to the challenges facing the nation and the world.

Sheldon Weinbaum ’59 is Distinguished Professor of Biomedical and Mechanical Engineering Emeritus at the City College of New York. He becomes one of only nine living Americans with membership in the American Academy of Arts and Sciences and the three U.S. national academies: Academy of Sciences, Academy of Engineering, and Institute of Medicine.

Jeffrey Friedman ’77 is the Marilyn M. Simpson Professor and head of the Laboratory of Molecular Genetics at Rockefeller University. For his research into the molecular mechanisms that regulate food intake and body weight, he has received numerous awards, including the Albert Lasker Award for Basic Medical Research in 2010. He is a member of the Rensselaer Alumni Hall of Fame.
