Angel E. Garcia, a renowned theoretical physicist in biomolecular research, is the Senior Constellation Professor of Biocomputation and Bioinformatics.

The vital role of computing in today’s biological research is evidenced by the growth of biocomputation and bioinformatics, one of the biotechnology research areas emphasized in Rensselaer’s strategic plan.

Bioinformatics approaches incorporate expertise from the biological sciences, computer science, and mathematics. Allied computational approaches using chemical and physical methods are also of widespread interest.

The Biocomputation and Bioinformatics Constellation focuses on developing new computing tools to analyze complex biological data, make predictions to guide experimental work, and offer powerful new methods to predict molecular structure and understand the complex behavior of living organisms.

Rensselaer launched the nation’s first undergraduate degree program in bioinformatics, and the Institute now offers master’s and doctoral programs.
